Choosing Your Class
Your class only affects starting stats and equipment. You can build toward any playstyle after the opening regardless of what you pick — but the right class makes the early game significantly easier.
Top 3 Classes for Beginners:
1. Vagabond (Most Recommended)
- Highest starting HP (15 Vigor), solid armor, longsword and shield
- Balanced Strength/Dexterity → flexible build options later
- Shield with 100% physical block → Guard Counters are straightforward
2. Samurai
- Starts with the Uchigatana — one of the best early-game weapons with innate Bleed
- Includes a Longbow for ranged options
- Dex-focused; suits an aggressive, fast playstyle
3. Astrologer
- Begins with Sorceries (magic)
- Glintstone Pebble is an exceptional early-game spell — low FP cost, high damage
- Safe ranged playstyle; requires learning FP management
Leveling: Stat Priority
Vigor — ALWAYS YOUR FIRST PRIORITY
Golden rule: Reach 40 Vigor before investing significantly in anything else.
Vigor equals HP. Low HP means dying in one or two hits from every boss. This is the single most common mistake new players make.
Stat Allocation Roadmap:
| Level Range | Goal | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1–25 | Vigor 25, Mind 15, Endurance 15 | Survivability, enough Stamina and FP |
| 25–50 | Vigor 35, main damage stat 25 | Comfortable through Margit and Godrick |
| 50–80 | Vigor 40, main damage stat 40 | Solid mid-game performance |
| 80–125 | Vigor 50, main damage stat 55–60 | Endgame-ready |
| 125–150 | Soft-cap all main stats | PvP meta range |
Damage Stats — Pick One and Commit
- Strength: Greatswords, colossal weapons. Devastating but slow.
- Dexterity: Katanas, curved swords. Fast, versatile, Bleed potential.
- Intelligence: Sorceries. Safe ranged DPS.
- Faith: Incantations. Healing, buffs, Dragon Communion spells.
- Arcane: Bleed and Poison builds. Among the strongest scaling in the game.

Optimal Exploration Route
Common mistake: Rushing straight into Stormveil Castle
Recommended route:
Phase 1: Limgrave (Level 1–25)
- Gatefront Ruins → grab Torrent (the horse)
- Explore southern Limgrave → Weeping Peninsula
- Castle Morne → practice against minor bosses
- Church of Elleh → purchase the Crafting Kit
- Farm Runes at boulder troll near Gatefront Ruins
Phase 2: Stormveil Castle (Level 25–35)
- Defeat Margit → then Godrick (use Spirit Ashes + Rogier NPC summon)
- Explore the castle thoroughly — many hidden items
Phase 3: Liurnia (Level 35–50)
- Raya Lucaria Academy — linear dungeon, straightforward navigation
- Rennala boss — use Spirit Ashes; go aggressive melee in Phase 2
- Explore Carian Study Hall and Ainsel River
Phase 4: Caelid / Altus (Level 50–80)
- Optional: Caelid early for a tough challenge and Radahn access
- Altus Plateau → Mt. Gelmir → Volcano Manor
- Capital Leyndell → Morgott boss
Phase 5: Endgame (Level 80–120)
- Mountaintops of the Giants → Fire Giant
- Crumbling Farum Azula → Godskin Duo → Maliketh
- Leyndell, Ashen Capital → Radagon / Elden Beast
Spirit Ashes: Best Summons
| Spirit Ash | Location | Why it's excellent |
|---|---|---|
| Mimic Tear | Nokron, Eternal City | Clones your exact character; strongest in the game |
| Black Knife Tiche | Ringleader's Evergaol | High DPS, excellent dodge AI, HP drain on hit |
| Lhutel the Headless | Tombsward Catacombs | Tanky, teleports to avoid damage, pulls aggro reliably |
| Dung Eater Puppet | Ranni questline | Tank with Bleed and Madness build-up |
| Skeletal Militiaman | Summonwater Village | Self-revives; endless distraction for the boss |
Weapon Upgrades: More Important Than Your Level
Upgrading your weapon matters more than your character level in the early game.
- Smithing Stones → upgrade normal weapons (levels 1–25)
- Somber Smithing Stones → upgrade unique weapons (levels 1–10)
Milestone: Before fighting Margit, your weapon should be at +3 normal or +1 Somber.
Where to farm Smithing Stones:
- Limgrave Tunnels (Stones 1–2)
- Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel (Stones 3–4)
- Twin Maiden Husks vendor (buy with Bell Bearings)
Boss Strategies: 5 Hardest Encounters
1. Margit, the Fell Omen
- Use Margit's Shackle (purchase from Patches for 5,000 Runes) → stuns him twice in Phase 1
- Summon Rogier NPC + a Spirit Ash = 3v1 advantage
- Roll into attacks, not backwards — his combos have long tracking
- Recommended level: 25+, weapon +3
2. Starscourge Radahn
- Summon every available NPC (golden signs scattered across the arena)
- Ride Torrent for hit-and-run damage between NPC phases
- When NPC summons die → their signs reappear — resummon them
- Phase 2: Dodge the meteor slam → continue the strategy as normal
3. Morgott, the Omen King
- Margit's Shackle still stuns him in Phase 1
- Similar pattern to Margit but longer combos and higher damage output
- Spirit Ashes are highly effective — Mimic Tear recommended
4. Malenia, Blade of Miquella
- The hardest boss in the game. This is not an exaggeration.
- Waterfowl Dance counter: Sprint away from the first flurry; dodge INTO the second and third flurries
- Bleed build is the best counter (Rivers of Blood procs Bleed quickly)
- Do not use a shield — she heals through blocked hits
- Mimic Tear + sustained aggression = the winning formula
- Most players need 50–100+ attempts
5. Radagon / Elden Beast
- Radagon: Dodge his holy AoE attacks and punish during recovery. Jump over ground slams.
- Elden Beast: Sprint to keep up (it flies frequently). Avoid Elden Stars by running in a wide circle.
- Haligdrake Talisman +2 (Holy damage resistance) meaningfully reduces incoming damage
- Lord's Divine Fortification incantation further mitigates Holy damage
Tips Nobody Tells You
- Golden Rune items — Don't use them immediately. Stockpile them; consume only before a leveling session to avoid losing Runes on death
- Rune Arcs only activate a Great Rune when consumed — save them for boss fights
- Two-handing a weapon grants effective Strength ×1.5 — if you're just under a stat requirement, two-handing can bridge the gap
- Guard Counter (block → R2) deals enormous posture damage and sets up ripostes — essential for Strength builds
- Craft arrows from Bone Arrows + Feathers → unlimited supply, better than purchasing
- Map Fragments are located at stele markers — the glowing pillars shown on the map
Conclusion
Elden Ring can feel overwhelming, but don't let that stop you. Pick a class that suits your instincts, invest in Vigor early, upgrade your weapon before upgrading stats, and use Spirit Ashes freely — they are there for a reason. Every death teaches you something. Every boss you defeat is a genuine achievement.
Become the Elden Lord. Tarnished, may grace guide thee.
