Genshin Impact Beginner Guide 2025: Team Comp, Elemental Reactions & F2P Tips

Starting the Right Way

Adventure Rank (AR) — The Progression System

Genshin Impact gates content behind Adventure Rank:

AR Unlocks Notes
1–12 Basic story quests, Mondstadt exploration Tutorial phase
12–20 Daily Commissions, more domains Light farming begins
20–30 Spiral Abyss, Liyue story Challenges ramp up
30–40 Co-op, artifact farming Team-building phase
40–50 5-star artifact domains Serious farming begins
50–60 All content, max weekly bosses Full endgame

Important AR tips:

  • Don't rush AR — higher World Levels mean tougher enemies
  • If the game becomes too hard → lower World Level (available from AR 25+)
  • Prioritize Archon Quests (main story) first — they unlock regions and reward Primogems

Elemental Reactions: Understand These to Deal 10x More Damage

Core reactions — memorize these

Amplifying reactions (multiply damage):

  • Vaporize (Hydro + Pyro): ×1.5 or ×2 damage — the strongest meta reaction
  • Melt (Cryo + Pyro): ×1.5 or ×2 damage — powerful but harder to chain consistently

Transformative reactions (create effects):

  • Freeze (Hydro + Cryo): Immobilizes enemies → free damage — most beginner-friendly
  • Overload (Pyro + Electro): Explosion + knockback — good vs. large mobs, bad vs. small ones
  • Electro-Charged (Hydro + Electro): Continuous electro damage with AoE
  • Superconduct (Cryo + Electro): Reduces Physical DEF by 40% — essential for physical DPS builds
  • Swirl (Anemo + any element): Spreads elements in AoE — core to Anemo character kits

Dendro reactions (added in version 3.0):

  • Bloom (Dendro + Hydro): Creates seeds that explode for burst damage
  • Aggravate (Dendro + Electro): Adds flat Electro damage — consistent DPS boost
  • Burning (Dendro + Pyro): Continuous fire damage on the enemy

The golden rule:

The first element applied is the Aura. The second is the Trigger. Reaction damage scales with the Trigger character's stats — so build the character who triggers reactions, not just the one who applies the first element.

Team Composition: How to Build Your Party

Basic structure: 1 Main DPS + 1–2 Sub-DPS + 1 Support

  • Main DPS: On-field most of the time, primary damage dealer
  • Sub-DPS: Switch in to use Skill/Burst then switch back out; deals off-field damage
  • Support: Heals, shields, or buffs the team

5 Strongest F2P Team Compositions

1. National Team (Best beginner team)

Xiangling + Bennett + Xingqiu + Sucrose
  • Bennett Burst → ATK buff and healing
  • Xingqiu Burst → continuous Hydro application
  • Xiangling Burst → Pyronado triggering Vaporize ×1.5
  • Sucrose → Viridescent Venerer shred and EM share
  • Why it works: Consistent Vaporize, self-sustaining, all 4-star characters

2. Freeze Team

Kaeya + Xingqiu + Chongyun + Sucrose/Jean
  • Xingqiu applies Hydro; Kaeya and Chongyun apply Cryo and freeze enemies
  • Frozen enemies cannot move → free damage windows
  • Why it works: Extremely safe playstyle; enemies cannot attack while frozen

3. Taser Team

Fischl + Beidou + Xingqiu + Sucrose
  • Xingqiu + Fischl create continuous Electro-Charged chains
  • Beidou Burst adds bouncing AoE lightning
  • Sucrose drives Swirl to spread elements
  • Why it works: Massive AoE output — excellent for clearing mob groups

4. Physical DPS

Kaeya (physical build) + Fischl + Xiangling + Bennett
  • Kaeya as main DPS with physical-focused artifacts
  • Fischl + Kaeya trigger Superconduct (−40% Physical DEF)
  • Bennett for ATK buff and healing
  • Why it works: Simple and effective, all obtainable for free

5. Hyperbloom Team (AR 35+)

Dendro Traveler + Xingqiu + Kuki Shinobu + Flex
  • Dendro + Hydro → Bloom seeds
  • Kuki's Electro triggers Hyperbloom → massive single-target damage
  • Why it works: Kuki's Hyperbloom damage scales with Elemental Mastery only → easy and cheap to build

Best F2P Characters — Tier List

S-Tier (Build immediately)

Bennett ★★★★

  • ATK buff AND healing in a single Burst
  • Fits into virtually every team in the game
  • Widely regarded as the best 4-star character in Genshin

Xiangling ★★★★

  • Free from Spiral Abyss Floor 3-3
  • Pyronado (Burst) is S-tier off-field Pyro damage
  • Core to Vaporize and Melt team compositions

Xingqiu ★★★★

  • Best off-field Hydro applicator among 4-star characters
  • Rain Swords provide damage reduction and minor healing
  • Core in National, Vaporize, and Freeze teams

A-Tier (Very strong)

Fischl — Consistent off-field Electro via Oz Sucrose — Viridescent Venerer shred, EM share, crowd control Kaeya — Free, flexible Cryo DPS or support Barbara — Free healer, reliable safety net Noelle — Shield, healing, and DPS (C6 is extremely powerful)

B-Tier (Solid options)

Lisa — Free, decent Electro support Amber — Niche but useful for puzzles and Melt setups Traveler (Dendro) — Good Dendro application, completely free

Primogem Management — F2P Strategy

Free Primogem sources:

  • Daily Commissions: 60/day → ~1,800/month
  • Spiral Abyss resets: ~600 per bi-weekly reset → ~1,200/month
  • Events: ~300–1,000 per event → ~1,000/month
  • Exploration: Chests, quests, achievements → variable
  • Total estimate: ~50–65 wishes per month as F2P

How to spend Primogems wisely:

  1. Never pull on the Wanderlust Invocation (standard banner) — use free Acquaint Fates here only
  2. Save for Limited Character Banners — for characters you actually want or need
  3. Pity system: Soft pity begins at pull 74. Plan to have 75+ wishes before targeting a 5-star
  4. 50/50 rule: 50% chance of getting the featured character; if you lose the 50/50, your next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured character
  5. Weapon Banner — a trap for F2P players. Avoid unless you are a heavy spender

Golden Rule:

Pull for characters you enjoy over pulling for meta. Genshin is not difficult enough to require a meta team. Playing who you like = actually having fun.

Artifact Farming: Don't Farm Too Early

Biggest mistake: Farming artifacts before AR 45

  • Before AR 45: 5-star artifact drop rates are low → Resin wasted
  • AR 1–40: Use whatever artifacts you pick up naturally, focus on correct main stats
  • AR 45+: Start farming 5-star artifact domains consistently

Main stat priority (simplified):

Slot DPS Support
Flower HP (fixed) HP (fixed)
Feather ATK (fixed) ATK (fixed)
Sands ATK% Energy Recharge%
Goblet Elemental DMG% Appropriate to set
Circlet CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG HP% or Healing Bonus%

CRIT ratio target:

  • Aim for 1:2 ratio (e.g., 50% CRIT Rate : 100% CRIT DMG)
  • Minimum: 50% CRIT Rate and 100% CRIT DMG

Resin Management

Original Resin (160 cap, regenerates 1 per 8 minutes)

Resin spending priority:

  1. Weekly Bosses (3 bosses/week at discounted cost — 30 Resin each)
  2. Ascension Materials for character level-ups
  3. Talent Books for skill upgrades
  4. Artifact Domains (AR 45+)
  5. Ley Lines for Mora or EXP when needed

Tips:

  • Never let Resin cap at 160 — spend before it fills
  • Condensed Resin (40 Resin → 1 Condensed) saves time and gives double drops
  • Transient Resin (purchasable from the Realm Shop) gives an extra 60 Resin per week

Exploration Tips

  1. Collect Anemoculi and Geoculi and offer them at Statues of the Seven → increases Stamina
  2. Unlock all Teleport Waypoints in each region as your first priority — fast travel is essential
  3. Cooking: Food buffs are very strong in the early game — ATK, DEF, and Stamina dishes help significantly
  4. Follow Seelies — they lead to reward chests
  5. Elemental Sight: Activate when stuck — it highlights objectives and interactable objects

Conclusion

Genshin Impact has a learning curve, but at its heart it is a game about exploration and collecting characters you love. Don't stress about the meta — build the team you enjoy, explore Teyvat at your own pace, and let the story unfold.

Teyvat is waiting, Traveler. Time to set off.
